With supervision, they will assist in real installations by mounting control panels, running conduit, and connecting sensors and thermostats.
Students will also spend time shadowing and working alongside a mentor or journeyman technician to observe troubleshooting and repair work, see how control systems integrate with HVAC equipment, and gain exposure to basic programming of digital thermostats and controllers. To strengthen problem-solving skills, students will complete small, hands-on projects such as wiring a basic thermostat to a relay and testing its functionality, identifying and correcting common wiring errors, or setting up a simple temperature sensor and interpreting its readings.

Testimonial:
I've been working since I've been 16 years old. First as a bagger/cart collector/custodian/cashier etc. at a Grocery Store. This is where I started connecting with people, hearing about their lives, and seeing people at their best and sometimes at their worst. This want of connection led me to pursue communications in college followed by a career in broadcasting. As technology increased, the opportunities in broadcasting decreased, so I took my talents and knowledge of connecting into the private sector. It wasn't the same. Then, I joined the county in 2023 and felt such a sense of pride. I could be myself, I could connect with people in my community, and most importantly grow.
It might be trash and recycling to some, but to me, it's an opportunity. And that's what I hope a apprentice gets out of this, the knowledge to forge their own path, to grow their creativity, and get an experience that helps them grow their talents in ways they want, and in ways that they need, so they too can make an impact.
Plus, we'll laugh a lot.
